D.H. Conley dominated all three facets of the game Friday night as it rolled to a 35-0 victory over visiting Cary.

The Vikings out-gained the visitors 300-88 in total yards on the night while also using a handful of key special teams plays to power their way to the win to move to 2-0 on the season.

“I’m really proud of our boys. Anytime you can win on Friday night, no matter how it is, it’s special,” D.H. Conley head coach Nate Conner said. “To win by this margin, they’re doing something right.”

For nearly a quarter and a half, both teams struggled to get much of anything going on the offensive side of the ball, as the game remained scoreless approaching the midway point of the second quarter.

Following an Imps punt, Conley took over at its own 35-yard line as Jason Herring handed the ball off to Yah Dade-El on the first play of the drive. The junior burst through a big hole up the middle before cutting down the near sideline and outrunning the defense for a 65-yard score to break the tie with 6:48 left in the opening half.

On the ensuing kickoff, a Cary fumble was recovered by Daniel Smith, as the Vikings’ offense got back to work in plus territory at the 24.

Five plays later, Herring took it himself, diving inside the near pylon for a one-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 12-0 after a failed 2-point conversion attempt at the 5:14 mark of the second quarter.

Conley’s defense continued to stand tall, forcing a three-and-out on the Imps’ next drive, as the punt bounced off a Cary gunner and directly into the arms of Isaiah Crumpler, who tore down the field for what appeared to be a 60-yard score, but it was called back due to a penalty.

Instead, the Vikings’ offense drove 75 yards in just six plays, with most of the yardage coming in the passing game. Herring found Cooper Marcum for a 15-yard connection on the first play, before later connecting with Crumpler for 27 yards. The drive was finished off when Marcum out-jumped his marker in the end zone to haul in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Herring.

Josh Mills tacked on the extra point, as Conley stretched its lead to 19-0 in the final minute of the half, eventually taking the three-score lead into the break.

In the second half, it was more of the same for the home side’s offense, as Crumpler set it up near midfield on a long kickoff return to open the third quarter.

Crumpler later finished a five-play drive by taking in a pass from Herring and following a strong block by Marcum into the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown just 1:50 into the second half to make it a 25-0 game.

The teams then traded unsuccessful drives, as Cary later found itself punting once again from its own 18-yard line.

A low, line-drive punt was fielded on a hop by Crumpler, who danced around a few Imp players before breaking free down the middle of the field for a 50-yard score. A Mills extra point followed to bring the score to 32-0 with 4:08 to go in the third quarter.

The score remained the same into the final quarter, as the the final points of the game came off the leg of Mills, who split the uprights on a 34-yard field goal with 10:56 left in the game to bring the final score to 35-0.

“That was a great opportunity to work on that and to get him more confidence and get our operation better,” Conner said. “I have great confidence in his leg, but we have to work on the snap and the protection too, so that was a huge moment.”

Conley finished the game with a 119-38 edge in the ground game, despite losing 50 yards on three high snaps that sailed over the quarterback’s head.

Dade-El led the way with 94 yards on seven carries behind his 65-yard touchdown run.

In the passing game, Herring finished 15-for-24 for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go along with his one score on the ground.

Marcum finished with six grabs for 97 yards, while Crumpler had five grabs totaling 53 yards.

D.H Conley remains at home to host Cleveland (2-0) in Week 3.

Rose saw its season record evened at 1-1 in a lopsided road loss in Clayton.

The teams battled into the second half deadlocked at 21, but the host Rams hit the Rampants with a 1-2 punch late in the third quarter and early in the fourth, scoring two touchdowns to leave Rose reeling.

The second was a 58-yard scoring pass by Cleveland that capped another long drive and made it a 36-21 game with 10:03 to play.

Cleveland tacked on yet another late touchdown to put the game out of reach and make it 22 unanswered points by the Rams until a late Rose TD softened the blow.

The home team answered immediately an early Rose touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.

The Jaguars lost a 21-14 halftime lead in Wheat Swamp and then lost a heart-breaker at the end of the night, when the see-saw suddenly stopped swinging for both teams.

The Hawks were clinging to the same 30-29 edge late in the third quarter after the teams traded touchdowns following a 22-21 lead for North Lenoir earlier in the second half.

But neither team changed the scoreboard the entire fourth quarter, leaving the Jags at 0-2 to start the season.

In addition to leading at the half, the Jaguars also struck first in the game, scoring and converting a 2-point play to lead 8-0.

A couple of late miscues doomed the Falcons, who lost at home to fall to 0-2.

Both of the errors came in the fourth quarter and both led to West Craven touchdowns to give the visitors first a 17-6 lead and then 23-6.

That was more than enough to withstand a late score by the Falcons, who trailed just 10-6 at halftime.

The visiting Mariners built a 21-8 lead by halftime and then tacked on another score and 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

A-G countered an East Carteret touchdown on the first play from scrimmage in the game, scoring a touchdown and cashing in a 2-point conversion in the second quarter to briefly hold an 8-7 lead.

The Rams put another notch in the win column, opening up a massive lead against Kinston and then hanging on for their second win in as many tries.

Greene Central upped its lead to 26-0 early in the fourth quarter after a Wilkes Thomas TD strike to Jamari Coppage, which came on the heels of Coppage’s 94-yard TD stroll earlier in the third that made it 18-0.

GC led 12-0 after the first quarter and held onto that lead into the intermission. That score came via two TD connections from Thomas, who found Josiah Thompson for a 48-yard score and then Jonathon Willis from 43.

The Rams finally saw their season shutout streak end in the fourth quarter when the Vikings found the end zone and furiously staged a rally that ran out of time.

The Saints rolled to 2-0 on the season in convincing fashion on the road, but most of it came in the second half after they led just 8-0 at the halftime break.

JP2 then unleashed its full offense in the second half, riding Rion Roseborough, Keiveon Moore and the explosive Saints running game to the finish line. Roseborough had three touchdowns and Moore added another as the Saints ran away late.

The Panthers hammered home the first win of the C.J. Wilson coaching era, outlasting Manteo in a high-scoring game.

Further details were not available at press time.

The Rampants continued their hot start to the season with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 sweep of visiting Perquimans Thursday night.

Leading the way for J.H. Rose (6-0) at the net was Amelia Taft with 11 kills to go along with two blocks and a pair of aces.

Helen Wilford followed with seven kills and six blocks, as Anna Bayes had six kills, 12 assists and three aces.

Rose is back in action Saturday when it visits Cardinal Gibbons.
